Catherine Harper
Another
of the unique positions held by women included the arrival of a woman to the
position of university registrar. Catherine Harper assumed the role of registrar
in 1952, a position that involves assisting with the admissions process and
the education of students in many disciplines. All who worked with her agreed
that her contributions to the Medical College are innumerable, and that she
left an indelible mark on the Medical University of South Carolina.
Catherine Harper was the second honor graduate with special honors in English
from the College of Charleston in 1926. She served with distinction in the high
schools of St. Matthews and Easley, and she was the first female teacher and
then later dean of these high schools. In 1946, Ms. Harper came to the Medical
College as Secretary of Admissions. In 1952, she received the appointment of
registrar. Her service to the Medical College was truly remarkable, particularly
in the area of admissions. She was held in tremendous esteem by all who worked
with her. The South Carolina Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions
named her an honorary member upon her retirement on July 1, 1969 and she also
received the appointment of Registrar Emerita. Both her cheerful disposition
and ready good counsel were remembered by all of those lucky enough to work with
her.
