When
possible, choose an interpreter of same gender and comparable
age or older
|
Age
often signifies authority in a culture and gender permits
sensitive or intimate inquiries to be made of the patient
|
| Meet
with the interpreter first to form a team approach.
|
Introduce
yourself
Establish
ground rules
Provide
a brief patient history and plan for patient encounter (when
possible)
|
| Insist
that everything said by all persons in the interaction must
be interpreted. |
The
interpretation must convey the content and spirit of what is
said. |
Stress
that all information learned during the encounter is confidential
and that nothing should be divulged without full approval
of the patient and physician.
