Suggested Strategies
Avoid working with a family member and NEVER use a minor

Fluency in language does not imply fluency in medical terminology

Confidentiality is compromised and sensitive information may not be disclosed

If a patient insists upon a family member as the interpreter:

Use only if this does not compromise services or violates confidentiality.

Document that the offer of interpreter was declined in the patient record.

Suggest that a trained interpreter sit in on the encounter to ensure accurate interpretation.
