Explanatory
models are the ideas about an illness episode held by a patient,
his or her family members and health care providers. Typically,
the health care provider's explanatory model is disease based;
the patient's is not.
Explanatory
models differ from popular health care beliefs in that the
individual forms them in response to a particular illness
episode.
Generally,
explanatory models include 5 major questions [asked
by physicians?] about an illness episode (though not
all models will address all five questions):
- Etiology
- Time
and mode of onset of symptoms
- Pathophysiology
- Course
of sickness, including both degree of severity and type
of sick role - acute, chronic, impaired, etc.
- Treatment
Remember: As a health care provider, you want to learn about the patient's perspective on their illness and while treating their disease, also address their concerns about their illness.
